Kuwait has a long Gulf coastline and plenty of places to ride. But not every spot suits every rider — some have sheltered, calm water that is ideal for beginners, while others are open sea and better suited to experienced riders. This guide covers the difference, the best time to go, and what to bring.
1. Khiran — best for families and beginners
Khiran, in southern Kuwait, is one of the country's best known spots for water activities, and it is where we are based. The waterways there are partly sheltered from open swell, so the water stays calmer — which makes it a good place for a first ride and for families with children.
It also has facilities nearby: parking, seating areas and restaurants. You can make a day of it rather than a quick half-hour trip.
2. Kubbar Island — for experienced riders
Kubbar sits roughly 30 km offshore with clear water and coral reefs. It is not a beginner destination — the distance is long, the sea is open, and you need a support boat and solid experience. Most people visit on organised trips rather than riding out on a jet ski alone.
3. Green Island and Gulf Road
Close to Kuwait City and easy to reach, but usually busier, especially at weekends. Convenient if you are already in the city, though the ride is calmer and more open down in Khiran.
4. Messila and Fintas beaches
Public beaches that suit swimming and relaxing more than fast water sports. Good options for a quiet beach day with small children, but organised jet ski rental is concentrated in areas like Khiran.
When is the best time to ride?
- Season: March to November is the best window. Summer is hot but the sea is ideal.
- Time of day: Early morning (7–10 am) has the calmest water and the kindest heat. Late afternoon (4–7 pm) is also good, and sunset on the water is worth staying for.
- Avoid: midday in summer — the sun is intense and heat exhaustion is a real risk.
- Wind: above about 15 knots the chop picks up and the ride gets harder work.
What to bring
- Civil ID — required when renting.
- Waterproof sunscreen, SPF 50+ — glare off the water roughly doubles your exposure.
- Sunglasses with a strap and comfortable swimwear.
- A dry bag for your phone and keys.
- Water — you dehydrate faster at sea than you think.
- A light shirt if you plan to stay out a while.

Safety tips for beginners
- The life jacket is not optional — wear it even if you are a strong swimmer.
- Start slow until you find your balance. A jet ski turns on the throttle, not just the handlebars.
- Clip the kill switch to your wrist — if you fall, the engine cuts out.
- Stay well clear of swimmers and fishing boats.
- If you fall off, climb back on from the rear, not the side, or you will roll it.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
